The Works, Jonatha Brooke's seventh solo release, is a full-length album of previously unheard lyrics by Woody Guthrie, set to original music written and performed by Brooke. Brooke is one of a select group of artists to be invited into the Guthrie Archives to create new works from his vast collection of lyrics, prose, poetry and artwork. Brooke co-produced The Works with the legendary Bob Clearmountain (Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones). Recorded over a two-month period in New York City, several acclaimed musicians including keyboardist Joe Sample (Eric Clapton, B.B. King), bassist Christian McBride (Sting, Diana Krall), drummer Steve Gadd (Paul Simon, Eric Clapton), and steel guitarist Greg Leisz (Joni Mitchell, k.d. lang, Wilco), joined Brooke in the studio. The album features duets with artists Keb' Mo' on 'All You Gotta Do Is Touch Me'; Eric Bazilian on 'There's More True Lovers Than One' ; Glen Phillips on 'Sweetest Angel'; with a special guest appearance by Derek Trucks playing slide guitar on 'New Star.'

super album of Guthrie material
I love this album ! Jonatha Brooke does Woody proud with this album of his poems. If you like this you may also want to look at the first albums of Woody's unreleased poems set to music from about 10 years ago : Mermaid Avenue and Mermaid Avenue Vol.II by Billy Bragg and Wilco.
The Works Best Work In Years
I bought this album just before seeing Jonatha at the ARK in Ann Arbor. She explaned how she was given access to the woody guthrie arcives ,and how she was inspired to write this music using his lyrics and poetry. I have listened to Jonatha since her days with the Story and have seen her live several times. This is some of her best music in years. Its kind of a new twist for her with a different band and guests. Very good Audio Quality with minimal compression. A must have for Jonatha Fans!!
Really Really Good
I heard about this album on NPR and was intrigued by the interpretation of Woody Guthrie's works by someone not of his generation. The result is wonderful--it's the type of CD you can give to friends knowing it will be an instant favorite. I liked The Works so much I bought a few of the Jonatha Brooke's other (prior) CDs too. While those CDs are pretty good, The Works is definitely a cut above anything else of hers I've heard (so far). It could just be that Woody is a better poet than she is, and she's a better editor of his work than others (such as the Wilco Mermaid Avenue CDs which are good but not "Wow.") The Works is wonderful and the duets are just fantastic. I really hope she makes another album based on Woody's poems.
